I am working on a product where I need a battery optimized beacon receiver - the opposite of what yo normal see with a beacon device where it is the transmitter which is battery optimized. Because it must be able to receive a beacon from a device at a distance of m my plan is to use the nRF and long range BLE. Which example from the SDK will be the best to make a fast prototype with a battery operated long range beacon receiver, which will wake up from deep sleep every 30s listen for an advertising packet and go in sleep again?
How often can an advertising packet be sent so the receiver don't have to stay awake for long time? Scanning is a much more power consuming action than advertising, so it will not be as power efficient as the beacon itself.
The reason for this is that while advertising, the nRF will use the radio only a few ms every advertising interval, while scanning will use the radio continuously for however long you are scanning.

Thank you.The nRF is just a chip, so of course it doesn't have a power source, you need to add all the external components required, including power, to use it, there are example circuits in the documentation.
Then you talk about ISP which is a module which contains the nRF plus some external components like antenna and crystals, and of course that doesn't have a power supply either. However Insight who make the ISP have a development kit which you can use to develop your own circuits and they have schematics and gerbers showing how that development board is designed. In the VDD position, the SoC is powered either from the on-board buck regulator, coin cell batteryor external supply P21 ". Which means that the switch should be pulled to VDD. Also, I recommend taking out the battery before you plug the device to USB.

Since most data exchange functionality is implemented I have started working on DFU. The central device firmware is updated via serial port. I have been able to use nrfutil python modules to do that.
However, when I run nrfutil dfu ble, it tries to load a specialized firmware on the central device in this case nRf DK. Is the illusive specialized firmware available in source format in github or somehere? I do not want to reinvent the wheel and if there is already such reference code available, I'd rather use that. Currently all my peripheral devices can be upgraded using nrf Toolbox DFU app. I'd like to do the same from my central device.

You don't have to use usb, but it's built into the nRF chip if you want to use it. As far as what's cool about it, well, that's a long list. Read the 1 page summary on page 1 of the datasheet. It packs a lot of punch into a small space and yet it's relatively low power.

It's my subjective impression that the indoor range on the nRF at 1mbps or 2mbps may be roughly equal to an amplified nRF, such as the Fanstel BTX. However, the nRF can do a slower speed at kbps using I'm not at all sure about the Kbps long range that's only available through Bluetooth.
I'm sure it's longer range, but Bluetooth seems not easy to program. Maybe a solution to that will be when someone does the inevitable module that can be controlled with simple AT commands.
